Chapter Six

Eventually, Rachel went outside on the patio to join the others. Much to her relief—and Jan’s, as well— Ross was able to convince Jorgie into letting the king snake go free, after telling the child that the reptile longed to be released back into its own natural habitat. Then he turned his intense gaze in Rachel’s direction. “I have a favor to ask of you.”

Stepping out from beneath her patio cover into the bright midmorning sunlight, Rachel shaded her eyes. “Oh?” she said, giving him a curious look.

“I was hoping,” he said, “that I could pick the boys up this afternoon and take them over to my house. I figure the sooner I get them there to see the place the sooner they’ll realize that I’m back in their lives on a constant basis.”

Rachel shrugged. “You’re so insistent about doing this, do I really have a choice in the matter?”

“I was hoping that you’d come, too,” Ross responded.

“I’m busy,” Rachel replied.

He propped his hands on his lean hips. “You’re not that busy, for heaven’s sake. You could make time if you wanted,” he replied. “You’re just being stubborn about this.”

“That isn’t a fair remark, Ross.”

He stepped back, pretending to be shocked. “Hey, I didn’t know that we were playing fair. In fact, who said that we had to play this game by your rules in the first place?”

“Well, I certainly don’t have to take orders from you.”

“I didn’t give you an order,” he said. “I did, however, invite you to come with me and the kids tonight and have a little fun.”

“In that case, I can’t.”

“Actually, what you really mean is, you won’t come. Am I right?”

Rachel took a deep breath. “Look, Ross, I don’t know what you’re expecting of me. But it’s obviously not the same thing I’m willing to give you.”

“Well, actually, Rachel,” he said, placing his hands on his hips, “I’m learning not to expect much from you.”

“Now, that’s a cheap shot.”

“You’ve earned it.”

“And you haven’t?”

“I probably have—in the past. But this is today. How much longer are you going to punish me for the sins of my past?”

Rachel gaped at him. “I’m not punishing you.”

“Well, you damned sure could’ve fooled me. And the kids, too.”

“Don’t bring the kids into this,” Rachel warned.

“What?” Ross said sarcastically. “Are you blind? Or have you simply refused to notice that they are right, smack-dab in the middle of all this?”

Rachel glanced toward her children who were concentrating at the moment on the spot where Jorgie had just released the small king snake near an azalea bush. “Look, Ross, I don’t happen to like the way you’ve just moved yourself into our lives now that you feel like it and expect us to just fall all over ourselves because of it.”

“I don’t expect you to just fall all over yourself because of me. But I do expect you to give me, this family, a fair shot at being happy together. And that’s what you’re not doing.”

“I am being fair.” She told herself to take a deep breath and calm down, so that’s what she tried to do.
